Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the wireless use of electromagnetic field to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. A radio-frequency identification system uses tags attached to the objects to be identified. The tags contain electronically stored information. This RFID sensor (MFRC522) is a highly integrated reader/writer IC for contactless RFID communication at 13.56 MHz. It supports SPI and I2C interfaces.

RFID can be used in a variety of applications like:

  • Access management
  • Tracking of goods
  • Tracking of persons and animals
  • Airport baggage tracking logistics
  • Machine readable travel documents
  • Intelligent transportation system
